At least two people died on the spot, and 12 others sustained serious injuries following a grisly road accident at Mbeji area along the Lwanda-Siaya road on the morning of Friday, April 25, 2025.
According to police reports, the accident involved a matatu and a KUPA lorry that was ferrying caskets to Siaya town.
Siaya OCPD Evaline Cherotich confirmed that eight other passengers were seriously injured and admitted to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
Police said the 9:30 am accident in the Mbeji area was caused by careless driving.
According to authorities, the matatu driver, who was heading to Siaya, made an abrupt stop, causing the lorry, which was moving in the same direction, to collide with it.
“The driver of the Nissan, which was carrying 14 passengers, made an unexpected brake, forcing the lorry to hit it,” said Cherotich.
Due to the impact, the PSV lost control, rolled several times, and landed in a ditch.
The two victims who died were all in the matatu vehicle.
Reports indicate that the area had been identified as a hotspot for fatal accidents in the past.
Cherotich said the police are investigating the incident.
Health Chief Officer Samuel Omondi confirmed that the 10 passengers admitted to Siaya Referral Hospital are receiving treatment.
“We have recalled health staff from leave to attend to the patients,” said Omondi.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Siaya morgue, awaiting postmortem analysis.
