Four people perished in an accident in the wee hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, when their vehicle rammed into the rear end of a truck along the Thika Super Highway.

Police reported that the four were on board a Suzuki Wagon with the registration number KDR 756K when their vehicle drove into a trailer with registration KBU 265W at the Membley area in Ruiru.

“The trailer was from Kahawa West general direction towards Membley roundabout, and on getting to the accident location, he was hit from the rear by the Suzuki wagon,” a police report, as shared by the police spokesperson Michael Nyaga, stated.

“Due to the impact of the collision, all four occupants died on the spot. The four bodies were moved to Thika’s General Kago Mortuary for preservation, awaiting identification and postmortem.”

Investigations

Police visited the scene and have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The accident comes barely a day after President William Ruto cautioned Kenyans to be careful on the roads during his short speech at the beginning of Easter celebrations on April 18, 2025.

“Please be safe on the roads and be blessed. To all families, all the friends, and every Kenyan, Happy Easter,” Ruto stated.

The Easter holidays are characterised by heightened activity and a surge in travel, with people commuting to various places around the country to celebrate with their loved ones.

Caution on roads

In an advisory to road users, Police Inspector General Douglas Kanja on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, cautioned road users on the dangers on roads occasioned by poor visibility due to the cold weather.

“The Easter holiday is a season traditionally marked by increased travel, social gatherings, and heightened tourism, all of which present unique security and safety challenges,” Kanja warned.

“These challenges are further exacerbated by the heavy rainfall affecting most parts of the country, which is creating hazardous conditions such as poor visibility and flooded roads. Such conditions are likely to lead to a rise in road traffic accidents.”

He equally noted that the police were in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to bring all errant traffic offenders to book during the festive period.

“We urge all drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, boda boda riders, and passengers to comply with traffic rules and regulations. Additionally, we appeal to owners of public service vehicles (PSVs) and boda boda associations to collaborate with police officers to improve discipline among drivers and conductors, enhance customer service, and implement safety measures to protect passengers,” he added.
