8 sustain serious injuries in Mombasa accident

Eight people were seriously injured in a nightly traffic accident in Kibarani area along Makupa-Changamwe Road in Mombasa County on Friday, April 4, 2025.

According to reports from the National Police Service (NPS), the crash involved a Tahmeed bus that crashed into two Public Services Vehicles (PSV) and a motorcycle.

The bus, which was heading towards Changamwebis reported to have developed mechanical problems before the crash.

Investigations started

The police confirmed launching investigations to ascertain the actual cause of the accident.

“Yesterday, 4 April 2025, at around 1930 hours, a serious injury road traffic accident occurred in the Kibarani area along Makupa-Changamwe Road. Police officers responded swiftly and took the necessary action. Preliminary investigations reveal that a Scania bus, belonging to Tahmeed Company, was being driven from Makupa towards Changamwe,” part of the police statement read.

NPS has further cautioned road users to be extra vigilant while on the roads during the ongoing rainy seasons.

“The National Police Service urges motorists and all other road users to exercise extreme caution while on the roads, especially during this rainy season,” NPS added.

Tahmeed company on Saturday, April 5, 2025, provided an update on an accident involving two of their buses.

In the statement, the company acknowledged the Kibarani Overpasss incident, noting that the bus was without passengers and was making its way back to the garage at the time of the crash.

No fatalities

“We also wish to report another accident involving KCK 104 at Kibarani Overpass at 8:00 pm while headed to our yard. The bus was without passengers at the time of the incident. No fatalities have been reported, and those injured are currently receiving treatment at the Coast General Provincial Hospital.

“The safety and well-being of our passengers is our top priority. We are cooperating with authorities as they conduct their investigations. Thank you for your continued support and understanding,” the company stated.

Eyewitness’s statement from the incident revealed that the bus had lost brakes while going uphill and had crashed into a matatu that was closely following it, after being trapped in a traffic jam that was building up in the area.

Several people, including the matatu driver, are reported to have suffered injuries on their legs after the bus rolled back on them, causing a pile-up.

Speed bumps

Festo Mosi, who was on the matatu, narrated the accident, noting that while he managed to escape by jumping out of the window before the incident, his friend was injured from the impact.

“I was in the matatu which was involved in the accident. While seated at the back seat, I peeped outside of the window to see why there was a snarl-up; but when I saw a passenger from the Tahmeed jumping from the bus which was reversing uncontrollably, I also jumped,” the eyewitness, who identified himself as Mosi, said on Friday, April 4, 2025.
