Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Kedeveresia Elachi recently caused public outrage with her remark, “If Kenya is bad, why not leave?”

The comment, directed at Kenyans criticizing President William Ruto’s leadership, was widely seen as dismissive of citizens’ frustrations.

But did you know that Beatrice Elachi was the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly for three years. And that plastic surgery in the US using public funds cost her the Speaker job in 2020?

103 MCAs vote to impeach her, and not even her party leader Raila Odinga could save her.

Beatrice Elachi was accused of spending Ksh1.5 million in public funds on a trip to the US for knee and plastic surgery.

CIC Insurance documents revealed claims filed for these procedures, sparking outrage among MCAs.

They argued that funding personal medical procedures with taxpayer money was a blatant abuse of office.

Other Key Allegations

Elachi was also accused of the following:

  1. Fake Honorary Degree: Elachi allegedly spent Ksh550,000 to attend a Dubai event and receive a dubious “Honorary Doctorate Degree” from the “London Graduate School.”
  2. Suspicious Conferences: She reportedly attended a “Dubai Leadership Summit,” which MCAs dismissed as a wasteful use of public funds.
  3. Misleading US Trips: While claiming to attend a Diaspora Women Network conference in Dallas, evidence suggested she was traveling for medical procedures, as indicated by a Ksh1 million insurance claim.
  4. Intimidation and Procedural Violations: Elachi was accused of using intimidation to force payments for her travels and bypassing proper financial procedures.

The Impeachment

The allegations culminated in a decisive vote: 103 MCAs supported her removal, with only two opposing and two abstaining. The MCAs termed her actions as a “great embarrassment” to the assembly and undermined public trust.
