Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued an update on the missing Kenyan police officer who is reported to have been killed after Haitian gangs ambushed their vehicle, which had gotten stuck in a ditch dug by the gangs, according to the Multinational Security Support Mission.

Speaking during an impromptu check on Karatina Police Station on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, Kanja observed the importance of the Haiti mission, noting that all operations come with injuries and that the Kenyan police officers are well taken care of.

“That officer is still missing and all efforts are in place to ensure that we get him. We want to promise the family of the missing officer that we are doing everything possible to get him back as soon as possible,” Kanja assured.

“Haiti is a very important mission to the national police service because we are supporting that country to ensure that their people can get peace and security back in their homes. Our officers have done very well because several roads, hospitals, schools, ports and the airports are operating now.

Injuries in mission

“However, it must be remembered that in all kinds of operations, including the ones back here at home, from time to time, an officer can get injured. But when they get injured, they are taken care of by being taken to hospitals and getting treated. If there is any officer who is injured, then they are well taken care of in terms of treatment,” Kanja observed.

The statement comes just a day after two more police officers were badly injured during a patrol in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince, which is mostly controlled by heavily armed gangs blamed for thousands of deaths in the Caribbean nation.

MSS spokesperson Jack Ombaka, while speaking to Reuters, confirmed that the two police officers sustained injuries and had been airlifted to the Dominican Republic for specialized treatment.

Casualties

The officers are reported to have sustained gunshot wounds to the head and ear, as questions begin to mount over the standards of the armoured personnel carriers and helmets offered to the Kenyan police officers battling the gangs.

In March 2025, the first Kenyan police officer to be killed in the mission was buried at his home in Kajiado County.

A special search mission has been put in place to recover the body of the missing Kenyan police officers after the gang fled with it during the ambush.
