The law enforcement officers have launched a probe into an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that rocked an eatery in the Shafshafey area of Mandera on Monday, April 7, 2025, leaving one person injured.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), a multi-agency security team responded swiftly to the scene, where they found the blast had blown off the hotel’s rooftop and left cracks in its walls.
The DCI’s report further revealed that at the time of the explosion, four customers were inside the eatery.
“A multi-agency security team has launched an investigation into an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that occurred earlier today at an eatery in the Shafshafey area of Mandera, leaving one person injured,” DCI’s statement reads in part.
“Responding swiftly, the team established that the explosion had blown off the hotel’s rooftop and caused visible cracks in the walls.”
The DCI added that the three individuals escaped unhurt, while one sustained a fractured left femur and pellet injuries to the abdomen, noting that the injured victim was rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
“At the time of the incident, four customers were inside the eatery. Three of them escaped unhurt, while one individual sustained a fractured left femur and pellet injuries to the abdomen,” DCI stated.
“The injured victim was promptly rushed to Mandera Referral Hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.”
Preliminary investigations
The law enforcement officials further stated that preliminary investigations have revealed that two of the three uninjured individuals are believed to be the masterminds behind the attack.
Additionally, DCI reports that the persons of interest have since been arrested and are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that two of those who escaped unhurt are the masterminds behind the attack. They have since been apprehended and are currently in custody as investigations continue,” DCI added.
Security officers are also pursuing a bodaboda rider who is reported to have transported the persons of interest to the hotel before fleeing the scene immediately after the explosion.
“Meanwhile, officers are pursuing a bodaboda rider who brought the suspects to the hotel and fled immediately after the incident,” DCI stated.
