Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly condemned an attack during a church service at PCEA Mwiki attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
During a media interview on Monday night, April 8, 2025, Murkomen termed the attack as primitive and further rebuked the previous chaos at the Jesus Winner church following President William Ruto’s donation.
“In any civilised society, those primitive activities of going to turn churches into a theatre of violence is not acceptable. It doesn’t matter and is not a political side issue, there is a consensus in their country that is primitive,” Murkomen stated.
“To be very honest, I was appalled when there was a glorified attack by a lot social media players against Winners Church in Kasarani. I found that very repugnant because Bishop Mwai that other day, many people were trolling him on social media just because the president visited his church,” he added.
Instructions to police
While acknowledging that the attack is uncultured, Murkomen revealed that he had issued firm instructions to the National Police Service to investigate the incident.
According to CS Murkomen, the investigative officers will probe who sponsored the attack and explore possibilities to establish if it might have been stage-managed.
“Yesterday, former Deputy President, again, there was an attack on the church where he was. It doesn’t matter who organised, it doesn’t matter whether it is an actual attack or stage managed, any of those things is not acceptable.
“We have asked the security agencies to do thorough investigations so as many people as possible are arrested,” he made it clear.
DCI have already launched investigations into the incident.
Societal issue
Kipchumba Murkomen blamed the rising incidences of violence-related activities to societal values erosion. He argued that for the past year, various people were glorifying violence, which has since been manifested through various attacks witnessed in the recent past.
Murkomen maintained that some of the issues may be tied to mental problems.
“But let me say this: this is also not just a security issue; as much as it is manifesting itself as a security threat, it is also a societal problem. Since last year, there have been many people glorifying violence. Once you have anarchy and preaching hatred, and as I said recently, people who hate others have mental problems, and that’s a fact.”
