In a striking departure from her previous position, Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti has publicly withdrawn her support for embattled County Assembly Speaker Anne Kiusya, effectively giving Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) the green light to pursue her impeachment.
Governor Ndeti, who had twice intervened to protect Kiusya from removal, made the announcement in a post on X on Friday, April 11, 2025.
Ndeti made it clear that she would not babysit the Speaker any further, implying that Kiusya must now find her own means of working with the disgruntled MCAs.
“I am not party to the stand-off between the Speaker of the Machakos County Assembly and MCAs. I have twice saved her from impeachment. I am not there to babysit the Assembly. The Speaker should find ways of working with MCAs,” the governor wrote.
Accompanying her statement was a video in which governor Ndeti detailed a past instance where she convened a meeting at her residence to thwart an impeachment attempt against Speaker Kiusya, which had garnered the support of all 59 MCAs.
“Maneno ya county assembly of Machakos I have saved the Speaker twice when she was being impeached by the county assembly. The last time walisign 59 wao wote wamtoe nikawaita kwangu, hawakujua speaker alikua hapo – sikutaka kuenda kwa ofisi because of embarrassment. They came to my place they found the speaker tukaongea wakacool down,” Governor Ndeti explained in the video, using a mix of Swahili and English.
The Machakos governor expressed her bewilderment at the renewed push for impeachment, questioning how the Speaker had found herself in the same predicament despite the intervention aimed at resolving the initial standoff.
“Tukakubaliana vitu tatu; speaker asitolewe, wale wote walikua wanataka kumtoa wasivictimiziwe kila mtu aachwe kwa ile position yake na wale hawana committees wapatiwe committees. Now if they failed to do that is that my problem, hio ni shida yangu. So mimi bado tu nitaongea na wao but also I am not here to babysit anybody – speaker ajue vile atakaa na members wa assembly,” she stated.
The renewed impeachment efforts follow a period of turmoil in the Machakos County Assembly.
On April 8, 2025, chaos erupted as rival factions clashed over the Speaker’s potential removal.
Subsequently, Speaker Kiusya indefinitely suspended Assembly sittings, citing concerns for her safety.
The impeachment motion itself stems from MCAs’ dissatisfaction with the Speaker over what they termed as incompetence and corruption.
Despite the Speaker’s attempts to quell the unrest, the MCAs have remained resolute in their stance, insisting that the impeachment motion will proceed and declaring that no further debates will be conducted under Kiusya’s leadership.
The situation is not entirely new for Speaker Kiusya.
Last year, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was among the political figures who intervened to prevent her removal from office.
At that time, Kalonzo urged governor Ndeti to take control of the situation and restore order within the County Assembly.
Governor Ndeti’s current stance suggests a growing impatience with the ongoing instability and a reluctance to repeatedly shield the Speaker from the consequences of her relationship with the MCAs.
