Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP–K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has called for an inter-generational alliance to defeat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections, arguing that the youth (Gen Z) alone cannot unseat the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Speaking during a media interview on Monday, April 14, 2025, Wamalwa stressed the importance of unity across age groups to bring about political change, emphasizing the need for collective sacrifice in the fight against what he termed as a corrupt regime.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child. So it will take a whole country and intergenerational kind of partnership for us to rid this country of this corrupt regime,” Wamalwa said.

“They (Gen Z) cannot do it on their own. We cannot do it on our own,” he added.

The DAP-K leader further praised the political energy of young people but cautioned against isolating their movement.

“What we are asking for is a partnership. If Gen Z goes on its own to beat William Ruto, they will not succeed. If we go on our own, we will also fail. But if we come together as a combined team and agree on the best candidate, we will win,” he said.

He expressed openness to backing a younger candidate, suggesting that the opposition is ready to support whoever emerges as the strongest contender—regardless of age.

“If it turns out that one of the best candidates is one of the youngest in our team, we will rally behind them. We are open to that conversation,” Wamalwa said.

While declining to name a specific opposition flagbearer, Wamalwa said the coalition’s focus is clear on unseating Ruto in 2027.

“For now, we can tell Kenyans we do not know who that candidate will be, but we know who must never be president of Kenya again,” he affirmed.

Rising Gen Z wave

Wamalwa’s remarks come amid growing momentum from Kenya’s Gen Z, who have emerged as vocal agents of political change, especially through protests and online campaigns.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah previously credited the youth for reawakening national activism, notably during the mass protests held on June 25, 2024, against the Finance Bill.

“The Gen Z protests of 25th June marked a turning point in Kenya’s activism. Despite autocratic leadership, the protests ignited lasting change,” Omtatah said in a statement posted on X on November 20, 2024.

He praised the movement for reminding the country of the power of accountability and the importance of civic participation.

“This movement awakened Kenya, reminding us of our power to demand accountability and fight for justice. For those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle, we honour their legacy by keeping hope alive for a Kenya governed by the rule of law and the Constitution. Let’s stay vigilant, united, and resilient in building a just and prosperous future. Change is happening, and together, we’ll see it through,” Omtatah added.
