Popular bus Sacco Super Metro has suffered a major setback after the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB) ordered that it fires 269 of its drivers in the latest ruling.

The judgment delivered on the evening of April 14, 2025, stayed the SACCO’s suspension even as TLAB ordered more inspection checks to ensure total compliance.

“It is hereby ordered that the appellant (Super Metro Sacco) shall immediately disengage 269 drivers as per the list marked ‘SPM7’ annexed to the respondent’s (NTSA) replying affidavit sworn on April 10, 2025,” the ruling reads.

“That in the interim, pending compliance with orders 1-5 herein, the respondent’s directive (NTSA/C/RT/010/2VOL. (1) dated March 18, 2025, suspending the operations of the appellant is hereby reinstated. The appellant shall forthwith cease operations pending further orders upon confirmation of compliance with the terms of the orders herein.”

Inspection checks

Further, the board equally ordered Super Metro to immediately deliver eight identified vehicles with various violations relating to speed limiters for compliance check at the Likoni Road Motor vehicle inspection center.

It also ruled that Super Metro immediately present 31 vehicles with identified compliance inspection issues at the Likoni Motor vehicle inspection center and submit compliance reports thereof to the Respondent’s Directorate of Safety.

The other orders were that 42 of the Super Metro drivers with over speeding violations shall be immediately presented for retest at the Likoni Road Driver Test Centre.

On driver sensitization, TLAB ruled that the Super Metro shall immediately furnish the minutes and the attendance list of Road Safety Sensitization of all its drivers to the Director of Road Safety of the NTSA.

Suspends operations

TLAB is a tribunal within the Judiciary which hears and determines appeals against licensing decisions made by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The ruling came after Super Metro informed its customers that their buses would cease operations for three days following a meeting with transport regulators on Monday, April 14, 2025.

“Super Metro Limited wishes to inform the public and our valued customers that we have achieved 90% compliance with the directives issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Transport Licensing Appeals Board (TLAB). We remain committed to fully adhering to all regulatory requirements to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our passengers,” Super Metro stated.

“Following a hearing with the Transport Licensing Appeals Board today, the Board has directed Super Metro Limited to suspend operations for the next three days to finalize the remaining compliance measures.”
