The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has clarified that a raid was conducted on the house and office of Kiambu County Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi.

EACC in a statement issued on Monday, April 15, 2025, said that its officers had recovered a total of Ksh12 million and USD13,000, all in cash, from the residence of Wamatangi.

The anti-graft body says the money that it has since seized is part of the evidentiary material to support ongoing investigations. The seized amount, EACC says, is suspected to be proceeds of corruption.

“Today’s operation has resulted in the recovery of critical evidentiary material to support ongoing investigations. This includes the seizure of KES12 million and USD 13,000 in cash from the residence of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, which is suspected to be proceeds of corruption,” EACC stated.

EACC on persons of interest

EACC further stated that its officers had executed search warrants at the residences and offices of nine individuals as part of an ongoing investigation, with Wamatangi being among the nine.

Other persons of interest listed by EACC are Peter Njoroge Ndegwa (County Secretary), Nancy Njeri Kirumba (CEC Finance), Salome Muthoni Wainaina (CEC Lands, Housing), William Kinyanjui Kimani (Chief Officer Finance), Phyllis Wanjiru Muiruri (Director, Supply chain), Henry Mburu Waweru (Director, Revenue), Paul Kibe Wangari (Clerical Officer), and Bernard Kabaiku Theuri (Director M/s Filtronic International Limited).

“Today, Tuesday, 15th April 2025, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) executed search warrants at the residences and offices of nine individuals as part of an ongoing investigation. Among those targeted was Paul Kimani Njoroge, alias Wamatangi, the Governor of the Kiambu County Government,” the statement read.

EACC investigations

The commission went ahead to state that the operation forms part of an ongoing investigation into financial and procurement malpractices within the County Government of Kiambu, focusing on conflict of interest, procurement irregularities, and abuse of office against the senior officials in the awarding of a contract for the supply, delivery, installation, testing, training, commissioning, and support services of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in a contract valued at Ksh230 million during the 2022/2023 financial year.

EACC is also investigating reports that the Kiambu County Government officials engaged in trading with the county and received payments totalling Ksh1.5 billion through irregular procurement processes and fictitious supplies, in violation of public finance management and procurement laws.

EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud has said that the investigations’ findings would guide the appropriate course of action against those involved, which may include the prosecution and forfeiture of unexplained assets.

“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the findings will guide the appropriate course of action, which may include the prosecution of any individuals found culpable, the forfeiture of unexplained assets, and the confiscation of proceeds linked to corruption,” Mohamud stated.
