Kenyan gospel singer Boss MOG has recalled a dark moment in his life when he felt completely abandoned by his family and as if no one in the world truly cared about him, so much so that he decided to hang himself.

Speaking during a candid and emotional interview with a local TV station on Sunday, April 20, 2025, he vividly recalled the chilling moment he lost consciousness as his vision darkened and life began to fade—until, in what he can only describe as a divine miracle, the rope tore apart and he was brought back from the edge of death.

“Nimekuwa na low moments. There was a time I felt rejected by my family, and no one stood by me, so nilienda nikachukua ka rope nikajihung, but luckily the rope ilikatika vile nilikuwa nimeanza kuona darkness. Mimi ni survivor wa kujinyonga.

MOG, who clarified that he was not born again at the time of the incident, went on to speak about what it’s like to actually die by hanging, explaining that one of the first things that happens is the loss of sight as you’re choked unconscious, before everything turns completely dark and life slips away.

He described that moment as one of the darkest in his life and emphasised the urgent need for people to receive Christ as a way to shield their hearts from suicidal thoughts and the dangerous lies they bring.

“So what happens, ukijinyonga, you start by losing sight, and everything just turns dark. That was one of the darkest moments of my life. Everything had been turning black,” he said.

Shooting incident

While at it, the singer revealed another grim chapter from his past, sharing that he had once been shot by people he had grown up with—people who, consumed by jealousy, felt that he had made it in life and was leaving them behind.

MOG recalled that the incident occurred shortly after he had completed high school. He had travelled to Korogocho to pick up his parents when he was ambushed and shot, explaining that he still went ahead and shot the rest of the music video with just one working hand, his body wounded and spirit shaken.

“So another dark moment in my life was when I had completed high school, and we were going to shoot a video. So nilikuwa nimeenda Korogocho kuchukua wazae. There is a song that normally goes like ‘It’s a heartbreaker.’ During that video shoot, nilishoot na mkono moja juu nilikuwa nimepigwa risasi. So vile nilienda huko, maboys waliniona wakasema, ‘Uli-make it ukatutoroka,” he explained.

He added that the shooters had been tracking him for a while, and once they found out he was doing the video shoot, they retaliated with bullets, acting on the belief that his life’s upward trajectory meant he had deserted them.

On that breath, MOG shared that all these painful scenarios occurred during a time when he did not know Christ—and now that he does, he is wholly committed to spreading the gospel, especially to those who are yet to experience the saving grace of God.

He passionately explained that there is an undeniable strength in being able to recall and speak Bible verses when facing hardship, calling on all born-again Christians to be intentional about reaching those who are not saved and to introduce them to the beauty of God’s word.

“So walinitrace wakanipiga risasi. You see, for us who know the word of God, ni tamu sana when you can quote a verse. The bigger job we have is to tell those who are saved to go and tell people that there is the word of God. People need us to speak out about what God is saying,” he concluded.
