Kenyan comedian David Oyando has revealed that a section of his fans living abroad had, from time to time, been sending him money in support of his stand-up comedy show dubbed ‘Let Me Explain’, which took place at the Kenya National Theatre on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
The comedian, who was speaking to YouTubers shortly after the show, said he was moved to find the theatre packed and the event sold out—revealing that some diaspora fans had been buying tickets and asking him to pass them on to local supporters as a heartfelt show of loyalty to his journey.
“We thank God for His blessings—planning all of this wasn’t a walk in the park, and I’m truly grateful to everyone and all the fans who bought tickets… But even more touching was the kindness of those living in the diaspora who kept sending me money, saying, ‘Buy tickets for the fans,’ which I then distributed to fellow artistes so they too could come and enjoy the show,” he shared.
Lack of Support
Mulamwah, who also expressed his gratitude to Kenyan fans who had purchased tickets, went on to lament that the entertainment scene, at times, remains dangerously prone to a lack of sincere support and admitted that he hadn’t anticipated the remarkable outpouring of love that eventually came his way.
He noted that the absence of support is often most evident in the digital space, yet affirmed that he never let this discourage him or derail his ambitions, as he made a conscious decision to press forward and test the waters to see what the outcome would be.
According to him, even the individuals he was collaborating with in promotional videos were not, in any way, involved in the behind-the-scenes planning, and he was keen to point out that he had pulled off the entire production on his own.
“I knew there isn’t much genuine support online, so when I decided to begin, I did so with that truth already embedded in my mind—I knew I was walking this road solo, counting only on those who would choose to stand with me—and although you might have seen my friends, the ones I did videos with and collaborated with, in the end, I was the one spearheading the whole project, and that, right there, is what made support the greatest challenge.”
Mulamwah added that he bears no grudge against the artistes who only showed up at the last minute, saying that although they weren’t available when the heavy lifting was being done, he understands that everyone has personal commitments they must attend to.
Nonetheless, he did not shy away from offering a word of advice to the Kenyan entertainment industry, highlighting the urgent need for artistes to understand the power of backing one another, even going as far as saying that it is among the few ways through which the creative industry will thrive and reach new heights.
“Now you’ll see some artistes turning up at this point, and I can’t blame them because they have their own things to attend to—but I would truly encourage a culture of support within the industry—one of the biggest challenges was people not believing in me, assuming the hall wouldn’t fill up, but now that it has, I’m thankful, and I sincerely pray to God to bless each and every one of you.”
Mulamwah, who recently disclosed that he is no longer together with his long-time lover Ruth K, further credited his personal growth—and the unfolding success of the things he sets his heart and hands on—to the relentless prayers of his parents, joyfully sharing that they, too, were in attendance at the show.
He added that several other members of his extended family had come through to witness the moment and shared that he was overwhelmed with happiness over how well everything had played out.
“We had spoken earlier with Churchill, and he has been incredibly supportive—I know he’s cheering me on, and I wouldn’t even be surprised if he shows up—it’s truly a parent’s prayers that are paving the way, and he’ll be here—my brothers are also here, my aunties too, and I’m so glad—my parent travelled all the way from the village just to come and watch me perform.”
The show exceeded expectations by far, as the audience was also treated to riveting live performances from musical talents like Zzero Sufuri, who performed his hit song ‘4:20’, while Mbogi Genje electrified the crowd with high-energy sets that left the venue buzzing with excitement.
Notable celebrities who graced the occasion included forex trader and self-proclaimed millionaire Kenyan Prince, alongside celebrated artistes Iyanii and Arrow Bwoy, with TikTok sensation Prince Chaalah and his girlfriend Miss Ell also joining the star-studded evening.
