Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has paid a glowing tribute to Pope Francis following the pontiff’s passing, describing him as a proper sinner’s Pope.

In a heartfelt message shared via his X account on Monday, April 21, 2025, Sifuna praised the late Pope for his compassion and progressive approach to matters of faith.

“Pope Francis is easily my favourite. A proper ‘sinner’s’ Pope,” Sifuna said.

He reflected on how Catholic doctrine sometimes views certain customary marriages as unholy, including his own.

“See, according to Catholic doctrine, marriages like mine under Luhyia customary law are considered ‘unholy’ unions. Sometimes they won’t even baptise your kids till you ‘regularise,’” he said.

Sifuna expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’ decision to allow priests to extend blessings to those in such situations, describing it as a deeply personal and comforting move.

“This is the Pope who said it was ok for priests to extend blessings to sinners like me. May he rest in Peace,” he concluded.

Inclusivity

Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope and the first from South America, was known for his efforts to make the Catholic Church more inclusive and compassionate, especially toward marginalised groups.

Pope Francis was renowned for his outreach to marginalised groups. He consistently emphasised the Church’s role in serving the poor, refugees, and those on the peripheries of society.

His support extended to the LGBTQ community, advocating for their inclusion within the Church. In 2013, he famously stated, “Who am I to judge?” referring to gay individuals seeking God. He also endorsed civil unions for same-sex couples, recognising their right to legal protection.

The pontiff prioritised interfaith dialogue and ecumenism, fostering relationships with leaders of various religious traditions. His historic meetings with Eastern Orthodox, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, and Sikh leaders underscored his dedication to unity and mutual respect.

Within the Church, he took steps to elevate the role of women, appointing them to significant positions within the Vatican and allowing them to vote in synods, marking a departure from traditional practices.

Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. His papacy spans from 2013 to 2025.
