In a continued effort to clamp down on illegal drug activities, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old man accused of trafficking bhang in Nyalani village, Nairobi County.
In a statement released on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the DCI said the person of interest, identified as Emmanuel Mwanyae, was apprehended by Kaloleni police officers at Nyalani village following a tip-off from members of the public.
The detectives further revealed that the officers managed to seize four full sacks of bhang during the operation.
“Crackdown on narcotics: acting on a tip from members of the public, police officers based at Kaloleni Police Station have nabbed 22-year-old Emmanuel Mwanyae at Nyalani village and seized four sacks of bhang,” DCI’s statement reads in part.
Mwanyae is currently being held in custody as police process his case pending arraignment in court.
“The suspect is now in custody, undergoing processing as he awaits his day in court. Meanwhile, the confiscated bhang is being detained as an exhibit,” DCI added.
Crackdown on drug trafficking
The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating along key transport corridors across the country.
DCI, on April 16, 2025, confirmed the arrest of a 35-year-old woman, Amina Mala Gure, accused of trafficking bhang in Moyale.
According to the DCI’s report, Gure’s arrest followed intelligence reports that led detectives to her home in Antut village.
The DCI further revealed that a search of the premises uncovered 27 tightly wrapped bales of cannabis sativa, hidden in sacks and a metallic box. The bhang, weighing approximately 137.8 kilograms, has an estimated street value of Ksh4.13 million.
“In an operation that left no room for escape, Moyale police officers have arrested Amina Mala Gure, 35, a notorious trafficker, who has been on the police radar for her involvement in the underworld of cannabis trafficking,” the DCI statement reads in part.
“Acting on solid intel, the officers raided Gure’s home in Antut village. There, they discovered 27 tightly wrapped bales of Cannabis sativa, hidden in sacks and a metallic box weighing a total of 137.8 kg, with an estimated street value of Ksh4.13 million.”
Similarly, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the arrest of a 26-year-old, Bernard Kungu, who is accused of smuggling 152 rolls of bhang at a bus terminal in Migori while en route to Mombasa.
According to a statement released by the detectives, the officers from Migori Police Station acted swiftly upon receiving a tip-off about an individual at the Tahmeed bus booking office.
“Responding to reports of a suspicious character trying to board a bus to Mombasa at the Tahmeed booking office in Migori, officers rushed to the scene. There, they intercepted 26-year-old Bernard Kungu, who was accompanied by two rather bulky bags,” the statement read.
“Escorted back to the station for a little ‘unpacking session’, the officers unearthed 152 rolls of bhang tucked neatly in the bags. Upon interrogation, Kungu claimed he was transporting the illicit cargo to Mombasa.”
