The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is investigating a case in Narok in which a woman claims to have been severely assaulted by a police officer.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, IPOA chairperson Issack Hassan revealed that the woman is currently admitted at Narok Level 5 Hospital.

The investigation comes moments after photos of the injured woman were shared on social media, igniting public fury against the police.

“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority IPOA, established under Cap 86 of the Laws of Kenya, has a cardinal mandate to ensure that officers of the National Police Service uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. Among other functions and as provided by law, the Authority is empowered to receive complaints from the public and, on its own motion, monitor police conduct in interactions with the communities they serve.” Hassan stated.

“Following widely circulated images on social media depicting injuries sustained by a woman, allegedly inflicted by a police officer, IPOA reached out to the affected family yesterday, Monday, 21 April 2025. An independent investigation into the matter has been launched and preliminary findings by our Rapid Response team indicate that the victim is receiving treatment at Narok Level 5 Hospital.”

According to preliminary reports, the woman was assaulted in public by a police officer after a dispute over motorbike ownership with another party.

“The Authority remains committed to conducting the investigation with impartiality, as it delivers its mandate of holding the police accountable, and working towards the attainment of the provision of Article 244 of the Constitution. IPOA will make appropriate recommendations if any police officer will be found culpable for any violation of the law. The Authority is independent, fair and impartial in all its investigations,” Hassan added.
