Veteran Journalist Edward Kwach dies after short illness, family confirms

Renowned radio presenter Edward Kwach is dead, his family has confirmed.

According to the family, Kwach who was receiving treatment for meningitis, died on Monday, April 28, 2025.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother, Carey, that occurred last night, 28th April 2025, while receiving treatment for meningitis,” the family’s statement reads.

“He will be remembered not only for his warmth and humour but also for his exceptional taste in music, which brought joy and comfort to so many. His passing is a tremendous loss to all who knew him personally and the many more who connected with him through his work.”

The family thanked Kenyans for their overwhelming support during Kwach’s illness, especially those who donated blood and sent well-wishes. They added that funeral and memorial details would be communicated in due course

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support during his illness, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who donated blood, visited, and kept him in their thoughts and prayers,” the family’s statement reads.

“We kindly ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Funeral and memorial arrangements will be communicated in due course.”

Blood appeal

Earlier this month, Kwach was admitted to Coptic Hospital in critical condition.

On April 12, 2025, a fellow media personality, Caroline Mutoko, on behalf of Kwach’s family, indicated that the experienced broadcaster requires immediate medical help in the form of blood donations.

“Edward Kwach, known to many as ‘Kwach’, a respected media personality and former colleague to many, is currently admitted at Coptic Hospital and urgently requires blood donations. Doctors are working to raise his iron and haemoglobin levels, and approximately 4 pints of blood are needed. If you are able to donate, please visit the lab at Coptic Hospital and indicate that the donation is for Edward Kwach. Your support during this time would be deeply appreciated by his family and friends. Thank you,” Caroline Mutoko appealed.

Condolence messages

His death has sparked an outpouring of grief and tributes across social media, with fellow journalists and fans expressing sorrow and celebrating his legacy.

Here are some of the messages;

“Many people don’t know this…but we are 1st cousins…and when he got into radio back in the 90s, my dream of getting into radio was more relatable because Carey, as we know him, had done it…and I followed in his footsteps until I got in… We have had friendly competition until now, with our deep voices competing for adverts and the like.It’s sad that some of the ideas we had will not materialise, but I will keep the dream alive,” Nick Odhiambo mourned.

“Edward Carey Francis Kwach went to be with the Lord yesterday evening. Heartfelt condolences to the family of Justice (Rtd) Richard Otieno Kwach. Rest in eternal peace, Edward,” MP George Kaluma mourned.

“Heartbreaking. A colleague and a friend. Rest in peace, Edward Kwach,” Carol Radul mourned.

Edward Kwach was a respected figure in Kenya’s media industry, known for his commanding voice, charisma, and versatility. He had a distinguished career spanning several top media houses, including Capital FM, Homeboyz Radio, Nation FM, and Spice FM.
