The Ministry of Education has launched investigations into the death of three students who perished after a public service vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a lorry on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.
In a statement, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba condoled with the families of the students killed in the accident, which happened along the Sondu-Ahero Road in Nyakach Sub-County.
Ogamba also wished quick recovery to students of Mbita High School in Homa Bay County who were injured after a vehicle veered off the road and ploughed into them as they were heading home for the April holidays.
“Two regrettable road accidents happened today morning in Homa Bay County involving learners of Ober Boys Boarding Comprehensive School and Mbita High School,” Ogamba said.
Parents informed
“The first accident, involving learners of Ober Boys Boarding, occurred at Kibuon along Sondu-Ahero Road after a matatu carrying learners from the school rammed into a stationary lorry. The impact of the accident led to fatalities, including three learners. Three other learners sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment. The parents have been informed accordingly, except for one who is outside the country.”
Adding: “In the second case, a vehicle hit four students of Mbita High School after it veered off the road. The injured boys were rushed to Prince Richard Hospital in Mbita. Two of the boys have been referred to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital for further medical attention and are currently in stable condition.”
The Ministry of Education is working with law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the cause of the two accidents.
Investigations launched
The Education CS, who was recently in Homa Bay County on a working tour which saw him visit the Tom Mboya University, also appealed to motorists to observe traffic regulations to safeguard the lives of students and other road users.
“On my behalf and on behalf of the Ministry of Education, I send our condolences to the bereaved families, and also wish a quick recovery to all those injured in the two accidents,” Ogamba noted.
“I appeal to motorists to strictly adhere to the traffic regulations to safeguard lives, especially during this week when learners will be travelling to their homes for the April holidays. “
He noted that investigations are on to establish the facts surrounding the accidents and provide updates on the health of injured students.
“The County Director of Education, Homa Bay County, is leading our team in the field and is at hand to provide updates on the two accidents,” Ogamba said.
