The Kenya Meteorological Department has advised Kenyans to brace for a wet weekend as widespread rainfall is expected across several parts of the country, with isolated heavy downpours projected in specific regions.

In a five-day forecast released on Friday, April 11, 2025, covering the period from Saturday, April 12, 2025, to Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the weatherman indicated that rain would persist across most of the country.

Regions likely to experience isolated heavy rains include the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the south-eastern lowlands, the coastal region, and parts of northern Kenya.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country. Isolated heavy rainfall events are expected over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, the Coast, North-western and North-eastern Kenya,” the weatherman stated in its bulletin.

In Nairobi and the surrounding counties, moderate rainfall is forecasted for the weekend, along with afternoon thunderstorms in multiple areas.

Similar weather conditions are expected in the central highlands, including Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Meru.

In the western highlands and the Lake Victoria Basin — including Kakamega, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Kisii — rainfall is expected each day, with thunderstorms anticipated in the afternoons and showers persisting into the night.

The forecast also indicates that parts of Turkana and Samburu counties in the northwest will experience high temperatures of up to 37°C during the day, with chances of rain throughout the forecast period.

Northern counties such as Marsabit, Wajir, and Garissa will also see scattered showers and thunderstorms.

The southeastern lowlands — including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, and Kajiado — will have a mix of sunny intervals and occasional showers, while the Coast region is expected to experience light to moderate showers, particularly in the mornings and evenings.

Coastal areas, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, can expect showers, particularly on Sunday, when forecasters predict precipitation over “several places” throughout the day.

David Gikungu, the Director of Meteorological Services, advised the public to stay updated with the daily 24-hour forecasts and to seek detailed information from their respective County Directors of Meteorological Services.
