Fired Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC) board chairman Irungu Nyakera has attributed his decision not to attend President William Ruto’s tour of the Mount Kenya region to Kenya Kwanza’s repeated unfulfilled promises.

Speaking to a local media station on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, Nyakera explained that the endless cycle of unfulfilled promises left him disillusioned, so he decided to skip the tour because he did not want to hear lies.

In addition, Nyakera added that his decision not to attend the tour was a protest against what he described as a predictable and unchanging promise by the Kenya Kwanza regime.

He pointed out that the same pledges made during the 2022 general elections are still being repeated today without tangible results.

“People are angry because of failed promises; the same promises we made then are still the promises that will make today and are the promises that they made two weeks ago when they were having the Mt Kenya tour, and that is why I did not want to attend the Mt Kenya tour because I did not want to hear lies or be forced to tell them,” Nyakera said.

Nyakera, whose Farmers Party was part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition during the 2022 elections, said that while initial delays and setbacks could be excused during the administration’s first year, the ongoing lack of progress in the third year is unacceptable.

“I remember in 2022, we were part of the Kenya Kwanza coalition as the Farmers party. I defended Kenya Kwanza for the first year; you can give excuses, but by the third year, you can not give excuses because that means by 2027, you will be campaigning the same way you were campaigning in 2022,” he added.

Nyakera’s Party

Days after Ruto revoked his appointment as chairperson of the KICC Board, Nyakera’s political party has initiated a move to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, Nyakera noted that the Farmers Party’s National Executive Committee okayed the decision to sever ties with the ruling coalition.

As part of the process, the party indicated that it had given a 30-day notice to the Registrar of Political Parties detailing its intention to ditch Kenya Kwanza.

“Accordingly, the National Executive Committee of the Farmers Party met on 7th April 2025 and unanimously resolved to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition,” the Farmers Party, which recently picked the embattled former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu to lead the outfit, announced.

The Farmers Party cited dishonesty among the reasons for deciding to part ways with Kenya Kwanza and the issue of unfulfilled promises.

“While the Farmers Party in good faith entered into a Coalition Agreement with like-minded parties under the Kenya Kwanza Coalition on 23rd March 2022, it is with deep regret that we note a consistent pattern of dishonesty, political infidelity, and outright disregard for both the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and the spirit of our Coalition Agreement by our major coalition partner,” the letter penned by the party’s secretary, Simon Kamangu, read in part.
