Police have issued a statement on the killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo.
Issuing a detailed statement on Thursday, May 1, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) noted that the MP’s murder was targeted and premeditated.
The police agency condemned the heinous murder assuring that no stone will be left unturned in the investigation and that those involved will be held accountable.
The police unit went on to state that so far, senior police commanders and detectives have visited the scene to piece together circumstances surrounding Ong’ondo’s brutal murder.
“National Police Service condemns this heinous and senseless crime and will spare no effort in investigating the matter. The service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents and close associates,” NPS added.
Additionally, the police service confirmed the reports on the manner which the departed MP was killed, calling on further witnesses to contact the nearest police station or call the toll-free number.
“The police agency detailed that reports confirmed by the Nairobi Regional Police Commander state that a white Toyota Crown vehicle believed to be that of the MP was seen making a stop at a red traffic light on Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout at around 7.30 pm,” police said.
Eyewitnesses who spoke to police added that a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the car.
“The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back to the motorcycle and speeding away,” the agency said.
“The driver of the car and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the injured man to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Further details gathered at the hospital confirmed the deceased to be Hon Charles Were, MP for Kasipul,” NPS added.
Condolence messages have poured in for the deceased MP, with Raila Odinga leading the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in condemning the killings and calling for investigations.
“We have received with shock and disbelief the tragic death of the Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were-MP Kaspul at the hands of a gunman along Ngong Road, Nairobi this evening. Were was in parliament for the better part of the day and left at 6:15 pm after participating in the business of the day.
“While we join his constituents, the people of the great county of Homabay, his family, colleagues and friends in mourning, we call on the police to investigate the shooting incident and bring the culprits to book. We shall issue a comprehensive statement in due course,” the party said.
