Kenya Met weather forecast: Nairobi among areas to experience rains and thunderstorms

The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted major rains over the weekend, which will pound Nairobi and other regions in the country.

In a forecast spanning five days, the weatherman indicates that the highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot Counties will experience rains in the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday.

The meteorological department notes that these areas are likely to experience rains accompanied by thunder and lightning in the afternoons, while the temperatures during this period will range from lows of 10 degrees Celsius to highs of 32 degrees.

Nairobi rains

Similarly, highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi counties, are set to experience afternoon rains on Saturday and Sunday before a short pause on Monday.

During this period, the region is expected to experience slightly colder temperatures of between 10 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees.

The North-Eastern region counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are also expected to receive rainfall in several areas on Saturday, April 5, 2025, afternoon, before returning to cloudy and sunny intervals.

The temperatures during this forecast will range between 16 degrees Celsius and highs of 39 degrees Celsius in the region.

Machakos region

The other areas set to receive the afternoon rains over the weekend are the South-Eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.

The rains will diminish from Monday, April 7, 2025, in most of the areas in this region, while the temperatures will range from 15 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees.

In what is seen as the beginning of peak rains at the coast, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties, as well as coastal parts of Tana River County, will experience morning and afternoon rainfall throughout the weekend.

The weather will remain cloudy, with chances of scattered rainfall throughout the region all the way to Wednesday, April 9, 2025.

During this period of the forecast, the temperature in the region will range from 23 to 35 degrees Celsius.
