Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has revealed the completion date of the Ksh2.2 billion Yamo Dam in Maralal, Samburu County.
In a statement on Monday, April 28, 2025, moments after inspecting the constuction progress of the dam, Kindiki revealed that the dam should be complete by June 2026.
The dam, once complete, will hold at least 1.5 million cubic metres of water.
“The government is accelerating the completion of the 1.5 million cubic metre Yamo dam whose completion date is June 2026 at a total cost of 2.2 billion shillings,” Kindiki stated.
Kindiki also inspected the Maralal Municipal Market, which will cost bth the national and county governments Ksh73 million to complete.
The national government will contribute Ksh50 million towards the construction of the market while the Samburu County Government will contribute Ksh23 million.
The market will entail trading spaces for traders with special rooms for lactating mothers, coolers for preservation of fresh produce and an ICT hub to facilitate e-commerce.
“Additionally the Ksh 73 million Maralal Municipal Market( Ksh 50 million- National Government, Ksh 23 million- County Government) will provide modern, dignified trading spaces for traders with special rooms for lactating mothers, coolers for preservation of fresh produce and an ICT hub to facilitate e-commerce. Inspected ongoing construction works at the Yamo Dam, including laying of the reticulation pipeline,” Kindiki added.
“Later, commissioned the Maralal Municipal Fresh Produce Market, Maralal, Samburu County.”
Kindiki was accompanied by Samburu County Governor Jonathan Lati Lelelit, Senator Steve Lelegwe, Woman Representative Pauline Lenguris, MPs; Lentoijoni Jackson Lekumontare (Samburu East), Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West), Letipila Dominic (Samburu North), Elijah Njoroge (Gatundu North), John Bwire (Taveta), Samburu County Assembly Steve Lenamarle, Members of the Samburu County Assembly and community leaders.
