Lawyer Ken Echesa has provided an update on the status and whereabouts of former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala following his arrest on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, in Nakuru.
Malala was taken as a guest of the state outside Kirobon High School as he attempted to join students of Butere Girls High School for the rehearsal of the controversial play he has directed – Echoes of War.
The play was due to be performed at the ongoing National Music festivals.
Speaking outside the Melvin Jones International School in Nakuru, the scene of the national festivals, on Thursday, April 10, Echesa disclosed that Malala is currently being held incommunicado at Eldama Ravine, having been initially moved from Nakuru, where he was arrested.
Moved to Eldama Ravine
“I spoke to Malala last night but then they took his phone. I went to the Nakuru Central Police station but they refused, I couldn’t access him, but I used my own means and technique to access him,” Echesa disclosed.
The Advocate of the High Court further decried a well-laid out plan orchestrated by the arresting authorities to harass the politician and the innocent girls of Butere High School in extension.
“This morning I again spoke to him he has been moved to Eldama Ravine. He is not in Nakuru. Their strategy is simple. Move him across Police stations and let the girls perform under very satanic conditions, and let them leave, then they release Malala,” he said.
The lawyer additionally confirmed he would be moving to court to demand the release of the politician as a matter of urgency.
Heading to court
“We are moving to court this morning once the court is out. We are going to make an application of habeas corpus, produce the body of Malala whether dead or alive,” he concluded.
Echesa’s sentiments come even as a heavy presence of police was witnessed at the scene of the national event. There was also a sizeable crowd gathered outside who voiced their frustration to the foregoing developments with the ‘Ruto Must Go Chants’.
Speaking on the incident, Echesa asserted that Kenyan will remain unbowed by the intimidation tactics from the law enforcers.
“We are here as Kenyans to make a statement that these officers can kill us or teargas but they cannot kill everyone. One of these days our children will rise against this oppression. We don’t fear and we can’t allow to be intimated,” he said.
