Matuga Member of Parliament (MP) Kassim Tandaza has questioned the integrity of Kenyans, accusing them of possessing an appetite for stealing.
Speaking during a live TV interview on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Tandaza said the vice, which cuts across almost every level of society, remains a persistent concern in the country.
“We know Kenyans have an appetite for stealing. It is not just the MPs or politicians. You can take it all through from a local matatu tout who rides a matatu — whether he remits all he collects — and the bodaboda man,” Tandaza said.
He further noted that corruption is a national issue, not confined to a specific group.
“When it comes to stealing of funds. Of course, we know this is a national debate and it’s why we have the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Agency (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and other organs to handle this,” he added.
While acknowledging the work of investigative agencies, Tandaza urged political leaders to take a more active role in combating corruption.
“Corruption is hurting this country and we should fight it as leaders instead of merely pointing fingers that particular individual is corrupt or more so generalize,” he said.
“Any leader misusing funds should be taken to court and the law should take its course,” he added.
Tandaza’s remarks came just a day after the EACC executed search warrants at the homes and offices of nine individuals in connection with ongoing investigations into financial and procurement malpractices in Kiambu County on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.
During the raid, officers recovered Ksh12 million and USD13,000 in cash from the residence of Governor Wamatangi, believed to be proceeds of corruption.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said the outcomes of the investigations would determine the next steps against those involved, including possible prosecution and seizure of illicit wealth.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the findings will guide the appropriate course of action, which may include the prosecution of any individuals found culpable, the forfeiture of unexplained assets, and the confiscation of proceeds linked to corruption,” Mohamud stated.
