Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to supporting peace efforts in Sudan following high-level talks with a United States delegation on the sidelines of the London–Sudan Conference.
In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, April 14, 2025, Mudavadi revealed that the meeting, held at Lancaster House in London, focused on fast-tracking the Sudanese peace process and reinforcing efforts to foster unity in the conflict-stricken country.
“Kenya and the United States remain committed to advancing peace and stability in Sudan,” Mudavadi stated.
The high-level discussions brought together Mudavadi and a US delegation led by Peter Lord, Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan.
According to the Prime Cabinet Secretary, the meeting explored avenues for accelerating dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders amid the ongoing civil war that has displaced millions and crippled the country’s governance structures.
Mudavadi further highlighted that the US delegation acknowledged Kenya’s instrumental role in facilitating regional peace, particularly in the Great Lakes Region, and pledged continued support for the country’s diplomatic initiatives in Sudan.
“The US acknowledged Kenya’s role in promoting regional peace, particularly in the Great Lakes Region, and reaffirmed their support for ongoing initiatives in Sudan,” he stated.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by a high-level Kenyan delegation comprising Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, National Security Advisor Monica Juma, and High Commissioner Catherine Karembu.
“This engagement took place on the sidelines of the London–Sudan Conference at Lancaster House. I was joined by Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, National Security Advisor Amb. Monica Juma, and High Commissioner Catherine Karembu,” he added.
Mudavdi in London
Mudavadi arrived in the UK on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the invitation of the British government to represent Kenya at the Sudan peace conference.
According to a statement from his office, he is expected to present Kenya’s position on regional peace and security, particularly in the Greater Horn of Africa.
“HE Dr Musalia Mudavadi, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, is in London, UK, to attend the London-Sudan Conference that seeks to bolster peace in the volatile Sudan…which is now entering its third year unabated and has led to thousands of deaths and millions of people, including women and children, displaced,” the statement dated April 13, 2025, read.
The Sudan conflict—pitting the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF)—has ravaged the country since April 2023, leaving more than 29,000 dead and millions displaced.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Kenya’s neutral stance, noting that Nairobi has hosted delegations from both warring sides, including SAF and RSF leaders, political actors, civil society representatives, and armed groups.
“During the meeting, Dr Mudavadi will affirm that Kenya supports a unified Sudan for the people of Sudan, advocates for a Sudanese-owned political process with the supportive role of external actors, and expresses Kenya’s opposition to using military solutions to address a political dispute,” the statement added.
