Multimedia University of Kenya has spoken out following peaceful demonstrations by students after one of their own, Lameck Wambui Mwangi, was killed in a suspected hit-and-run accident.
In a statement issued on Monday, March 10, 2025, the university expressed deep regret over Mwangi’s passing and extended condolences to his family, friends, and fellow students. The management confirmed that the case had been taken over by the police for further investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. They also acknowledged the grief and pain experienced by students and urged them to remain calm while investigations continue.
The university reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe and conducive learning environment, assuring students that their concerns were being addressed.
“The Multimedia University of Kenya (MMU) deeply regrets to confirm the tragic passing of one of our students in a suspected road accident during the early hours of Sunday, 9th March 2025. The matter was taken over by the police for a detailed investigation of the circumstances surrounding the suspected road accident. As a result of the accident, our students this morning held a peaceful demonstration along Magadi road to express their concern regarding the incident,” the statement read in part.
“The University Management wishes to convey deepest condolences to the family, friends and students during this period of grief. This is a profound loss, and we join together in mourning a bright and promising young life. We recognize the grief and pain our students are experiencing and urge them to remain calm while the relevant authorities carry out their investigations. The University Management is always committed to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment for our students.”
Protests
The protests, which began early in the morning, saw students blocking Magadi Road towards Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, disrupting traffic for several hours.
The demonstrations escalated into confrontations with the police as students decried negligence by authorities in addressing road safety around the university. Running battles ensued, causing further disruptions before law enforcement dispersed the crowd.
