Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has mourned the passing of Janet Teyiaa, the former Kajiado County Woman Representative, hailing her as a principled leader and a courageous advocate for inclusivity.
In a heartfelt message shared on his X account on April 8, 2025, Muturi, who served as Speaker of the National Assembly during Teyiaa’s term, described her death as a profound loss to the nation.
“Teyiaa served in the 12th Parliament from 2017 to 2022 during my tenure as Speaker of the National Assembly. Throughout her time in Parliament, she distinguished herself as a calm, principled, and effective legislator,” Muturi stated.
He recalled her unwavering commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities, adding that her presence in parliament gave a voice to a community that has long fought for recognition and equity.
“As a person living with disability, she was a courageous voice for inclusivity—championing policies and programs that uplifted persons with disabilities and gave them a stronger presence in the national conversation,” Muturi added.
He extended his condolences to Teyiaa’s family, friends, and the people of Kajiado County, noting that her legacy will live on in the values she upheld and the lives she touched.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the people of Kajiado County. May the Almighty grant them comfort, and may her soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
Teyiaa’s political journey
Janet Teyiaa began her political career in 2013 when she was nominated to the National Assembly to represent persons with disabilities.
In 2017, she was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket as the Woman Representative for Kajiado County, a position she held until 2022.
Though she did not seek re-election in the 2022 general elections, she remained politically active and supported Leah Sopiato Sangaire, the candidate endorsed by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Tributes from leaders
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also mourned Teyiaa’s passing, describing her as a symbol of resilience and hope.
In a tribute shared on April 7, 2025, Gachagua reflected on her life story and her determination to overcome early challenges related to her disability.
“Janet, a young girl, saved by a social worker due to her disability in her childhood days, brimmed with the epitome of resilience and a great spirit that nothing can stop a great soul from realising their dreams, especially the people who are abled differently,” he wrote.
Gachagua praised Teyiaa’s leadership and her work in championing the needs of her community, especially persons with disabilities.
“Her contribution in Kajiado County on what ails our communities speaks volumes on her resolve, especially speaking and advocating for the people living with disabilities, and will remain in our hearts as a people. She has left a big gap in our nation. My deepest sympathies to her immediate family, to the people of Kajiado County and to the people of Kenya. May her soul rest in eternal peace and perpetual light shine upon her forever,” he stated.
