Peter Muteti Njeru, a 22-year-old vocal government critic went missing on Saturday, December 21. He had posted a controversial image of President William Ruto on social media, which reportedly sparked outrage.
His disappearance has left his family and friends in anguish.
According to his girlfriend, Mary Wambui, Peter left their apartment around 9 a.m. to buy breakfast. “He went to get breakfast and didn’t come back,” Wambui said.
Worried, she went downstairs to look for him. Witnesses told her that armed men had abducted him. They said he was forced into a Subaru with the registration number KCF 035M.
Peter’s phone has been off since then, leaving his loved ones unable to reach him.
Wambui revealed that Peter had been receiving threats after he posted the controversial image of President William Ruto online. The post had caused outrage, and Peter deleted it soon after.
Christine Kendi, Peter’s cousin, has called on the authorities to reveal where he is. “We understand that Peter has been vocal online and may have done something offensive, but there is a legal process. He shouldn’t be hidden; he should be presented in court,” she said.
The family has asked the authorities to review CCTV footage from the area where the abduction happened. However, they have faced resistance from the supermarket management and other businesses nearby. Many are afraid to cooperate because of recent cases of disappearances in the country.
Peter’s family is frustrated and desperate for answers. They continue to plead with the police and detectives to find him and ensure he is safe.
