The man accused in the murder of 15-year-old Malini Persad has died by suicide. He was found hanging from an item of clothing while in custody at the Barrackpore Police Station on Saturday, April 19th, 2025.
On Friday April 18th, 2025, during an interview with police at the Barrackpore Police Station, Vinod Avinash Kotai, the suspect, confessed to being in company with the deceased.

A tragic end to the search for 15-year-old Malini Persad came on Thursday when skeletal remains believed to be hers were discovered in a remote area of Barrackpore.
Barrackpore police, acting on information, were searching along KPA Road when they were directed to a location behind Renaissance Energy Ltd at GP Local Road.
There, they found human remains, along with personal items including clothing and strands of long black hair.
Malini, an autistic Form Two student of ASJA Girls’ College in Barrackpore, was last seen leaving her home on Rochard Douglas Road on Sunday, April 13th, 2025.
CCTV footage captured her walking out with several bags, and later in the company of a 52-year-old man now in police custody.
The suspect reportedly admitted to seeing and speaking with the teenager, and even claimed to have purchased a meal for her. Investigations are ongoing. — Story by Ian Alleyne Network
