The Mau Mau Road in Murang’a County is 60 per cent complete, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has revealed.

In a progress update on Friday, April 25, 2025, Omollo said the construction of the road, which had stalled, had resumed, offering hope to the people of Kinyona, Mununga, Ichichi, Thuthu, Wanjere, Kagongo, Mioro and Kiamuturi and Kairo, who will be the direct beneficiaries of the road.

“The construction of Mau Mau Road Lot 2 in Murang’a County is progressing well, with 60% of the 154-kilometre stretch now complete. This critical road corridor, which begins at Mairi and cuts through Kinyona, Mununga, Ichichi, Thuthu, Wanjere, Kagongo, Mioro and Kiamuturi before ending at Kairo, had stalled for decades, denying local communities the connectivity they deserved,” Omollo stated.

“Now revitalized under the leadership of H.E President @WilliamsRuto, the project reaffirms his administration’s commitment to national development through regional integration and improved rural-urban linkages.”

Omollo says once completed, the road will ease transport for thousands of farmers, especially those engaged in coffee, tea and dairy production, by lowering post-harvest losses, reducing travel time and opening up markets.

“This investment in road infrastructure is a deliberate strategy under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) to unlock rural productivity, support value chains and drive inclusive economic growth from the grassroots,” he added.

The government says beyond economic benefits, the project also preserves the historical significance of the Mau Mau routes, enhancing connectivity through tea-growing zones and conservation areas.

In February 2024, President William Ruto announced that the government would resume construction of the 200km Mau Mau roads.

He said the government has overcome debt challenges that had slowed key development programmes, including the Mau Mau roads.
