President William Ruto has inspected the ongoing construction of 4,500 affordable homes in Shauri Moyo as part of his administration’s efforts to modernize Nairobi and improve housing conditions.
During an inspection of the ongoing construction of the Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project in Kamukunji Constituency on Monday, March 10, 2025, Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to making housing more accessible to city residents.
He assured Nairobi residents that those currently living in small, inadequate houses will be relocated to the new units at a lower cost than what they currently pay. Ruto emphasized that Nairobi, as the capital city, must transform to align with its status as a modern metropolis.
“Hapa tunajenga nyumba 4,500. Wale watu wanaishi nyumba ndogo ndogo tutwaleta apa na watalipa pesa kidogo kushinda vile wanalipa kwa izo nyumba ndogo. We must change this city. It is the capital city of Kenya, lazima ibadilike. Nairobi itakuwa mji wa kisasa,” Ruto promised.
The president also highlighted Nairobi’s global significance, noting that it hosts the only United Nations headquarters in the Global South. He stressed that upgrading the city’s infrastructure and eliminating informal settlements is essential for making Nairobi more attractive and livable.
“Nairobi is our country’s capital and also the only United Nations headquarters in the Global South. It is so important a city that we must upgrade its face and make it modern. Our affordable housing Programme will rid Nairobi of many informal settlements and provide millions of residents with decent living. Inspected the ongoing construction of the 4,566-unit Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project, Kamukunji Constituency,” a statement shared via his X account read.
About Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing project
The Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing project was launched in January 2023.
During the groundbreaking ceremony in Nairobi, President Ruto stated that the development would feature 25-story apartment buildings to maximize housing for city residents. He noted that the initial design proposed 16-story buildings, but due to limited land availability, the decision was made to increase the number of floors.
“My people in the ministry had planned to construct 16-storey apartments, but I have told them the land is scarce in Nairobi. The governor of Nairobi Sakaja will approve it so that city residents can have homes,” Ruto said.
The project site, located approximately 300 meters off Jogoo Road and at the gateway to the Eastleigh suburbs, previously comprised 299 ancient-designed single-storey houses with mainly single/double-room dwellings and communal ablution facilities.
The Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project is designed as a comprehensive mixed-use development that combines residential and commercial spaces with community amenities. The project delivers a diverse range of housing options across three phases with 22 blocks together with integrated affordable, social, and market-rate housing units.
