President William Ruto has held a telephone conversation with United Nations (UN) secretary general António Guterres the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti.
This comes days after two Kenyan police officers in Haiti were seriously injured in clashes with gangs, adding to the mission’s growing list of casualties as it comes under increasingly frequent attacks.
Kenya first deployed officers last June to the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, which currently has around 1,000 security personnel, about three-quarters of them from Kenya.
It suffered its first fatality in February, and the MSS reported another Kenyan officer missing last week.
In a statement on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Ruto said the conversation also focused on the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in which Kenya is involved in peace talks.
“I held a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General @antonioguterres, during which we discussed the UN’s continued support for the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti. He acknowledged Kenya’s leadership role and commended our steadfast commitment to our shared goal of restoring stability in Haiti,” Ruto stated.
“I also briefed him on our ongoing efforts to advance peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. I highlighted the outcomes of the recent joint East African Community–Southern African Development Community summit, which built on previous initiatives and endorsed a clear roadmap with immediate, medium, and long-term actions.”
Ruto says he has also called on the UN to support the joint EAC-SADC regional efforts in implementing the roadmap for peace in eastern DRC.
“Additionally, we reaffirmed our shared commitment to regional peace, security, and sustainable conflict resolution, emphasising the importance of continued collaboration between the United Nations and regional initiatives.”
