One of President William Ruto’s sons has gone back to school to help the country elevate football and monetise its talent.

Speaking during the flagging off of the Kenya under-20 national team for the forthcoming TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the head of state revealed that one of his sons had embarked on a journey of pursuing a master’s in football management.

Without specifying whether it was Nick or George Ruto, the president explained that the decision was to help revive football in the country.

Ruto went on to explain that his son had been pressuring him, demanding to know the actions his administration had taken to help the country’s football hit the expected standards.

“I want to tell you my own son is a great fan of football, he keeps telling me we have to do something. So that you know how serious he is, he has gone to do a master’s in sports management because he wants to come and support you,” Ruto disclosed without specifically revealing the exact son.

“Because the young people in Kenya see the potential and opportunities that exist in sports, including football.”

Message to FKF leadership

While revealing his son’s ambition for transforming Kenyan football, Ruto challenged Football Kenya Federation leadership, led by Hussein Mohamed and McDonald Mariga, to put their best foot forward.

“So I want to encourage you as the federation, you have the support of the government of Kenya, and you have my support. Part of the reason as to why I decided to build a football-only stadium in Jamhuri because it is time we elevate football to where it should be,” Ruto asserted.

“We are also refurbishing Kasarani, we are putting a canopy, and we will do the same in Nyayo Stadium.”

U-20 team

At the same time, Ruto implored the Kenya under-20 football team to fly the country’s flag high during the continental tournament set to be held in Morocco.

He promised to fly out and attend their match if they reach the finals of the competition. Kenya has been placed in Group B of the forthcoming AFCON 2025, which has Nigeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
