Nyandarua County Senator John Methu has called on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to make a firm decision on his political allegiance ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Methu made the remarks on Thursday, February 27, 2025, during the launch of Martha Karua’s People’s Liberation Party (PLP), urging Raila to declare whether he will join President William Ruto’s government or remain in the opposition.

Methu emphasized that Raila’s recent defeat in his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has left many Kenyans questioning his next political move. The senator stressed the importance of clarity from the opposition leader, stating that his decision would determine how political factions engage with him in the coming days.

Kiongozi ambaye tunamheshimu na tunampea pole zetu kwa kupoteza kiti cha AUC. Lakini tunamuomba kwa heshima. Mheshimiwa Raila Odinga, show us the signal. So that we know if you are with the oppressors or with us. So that we know how to deal with you. Kama unaungana na Kasongo, tuambie mapema. Kama unaungana na sisi, wakati ndio huu. Kwa sababu team ya kuokoa Kenya ni hii iko hapa,” Methu stated.

Pressure is mounting on Raila to provide direction following the collapse of his bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

However, his longstanding role as a key opposition figure leaves room for the possibility that he will continue to challenge Ruto’s leadership.

Consultations

Speaking in Mombasa on Monday, February 24, 2025, President Ruto reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with Raila to advance Kenya’s development agenda. He acknowledged Raila’s role in nation-building and emphasized shared priorities such as infrastructure, intra-African trade, and economic growth.

Ruto praised Raila’s dedication during his African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship campaign, noting his active participation.

The president expressed eagerness to work with Raila, stressing unity for national progress.

“It is a proud moment for us to receive you back home and to engage with you as we drive the development of our country,” Ruto said.

On his part, Raila reaffirmed his commitment to Kenya and Africa, saying he would soon consult allies before deciding his next move.

We are available to help the continent of Africa, but more importantly, we are also available for Kenya,” Raila stated.
