Kenya’s fast-rising singer Stevo Simple Boy has continued to spill the beans on his messy relationship with ex-wife Grace Atieno, and in a latest interview, he went further to recount the tense and confusing final moments that unfolded just before Grace disappeared from his life.
In an interview with YouTuber Duncan Jamal on Sunday, April 6, 2025, the ‘Mambo Imechemka’ crooner spoke fervently about Grace’s unpredictable character, revealing that he was actually not around when Grace decided to pack her things and go.
The singer disclosed that he had travelled to Nakuru to attend to an important music engagement, and while on the way, Grace reached out to him, requesting Ksh1,000 under the pretext that she urgently needed to buy medication for the baby, who she claimed had fallen seriously ill.
“There was a day last year when I had a show in Nakuru, and we were travelling when she called me, saying the baby was sick and asked me to send her money to buy medicine. When I came back in the evening, I found the girl was gone.”
However, on returning home later in the day, Stevo was stunned to find an empty house but comforted himself by saying he hoped Grace had truly taken the baby to the hospital and that she was eventually going to show up.
“I thought she had gone to the hospital and would return in the evening, so I stayed in the house until it got to ten o’clock or even eleven and realised she wasn’t coming back.”
Later on, he made an effort to reach out to her by calling to find out what was truly going on, but Grace snapped at him coldly, questioning who he thought he was to be asking where she had gone.
“I called her and she responded rudely, saying, ‘Who do you think you are to ask where I am?’ I thought maybe…”
Stevo insisted that he still did not jump to the conclusion that he was being dumped and shared that he thought she was just having another one of her typical days full of emotional outbursts.
However, on calling the second day, she claimed to have been busy, but hours later, she sent him an SMS message saying that if Stevo had nothing to do with her, then he should not try and call her again.
According to Stevo, that precise moment was the turning point and the reason he decided to sever ties with her for good, explaining that as a man, it would have been beneath him to keep chasing someone who had already declared so openly that she wanted nothing to do with him.
“There are days she just doesn’t want us to talk. The second day she didn’t answer and said she would call me back. Shortly after, I saw a message on my phone and she said, ‘Stevo, if you have nothing meaningful to say, don’t ever call me again.’ I called her brother, and he called her, and she told him she didn’t want anything to do with me. So, I ended things.”
Deadbeat husband
Additionally, Stevo fired back at some recent claims made by Grace that he was a deadbeat husband who had deliberately abandoned her, calling it deeply ironic and unfair of her to make such claims.
He insisted that he had done what any other man could have done—walk away— and said Grace should have handled their issues maturely and sought a proper way for them to bring closure when their disagreements first started.
“Just the other day I was surprised to see things online saying I don’t support my child. As a man, if she tells you not to speak to her or not to reach out, won’t you do just that? Even if your wife is angry or you’ve wronged her, she should say, ‘I see things aren’t working here. Let’s fix this or find a way to help each other.’ But not just leave the house without telling you anything.”
