The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of a 35-year-old woman accused of trafficking bhang in Moyale.

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the DCI said Amina Mala Gure, who had been on the police radar over suspected involvement in bhang trafficking, was arrested by officers based in Moyale.

According to the DCI’s report, Gure’s arrest followed intelligence reports that led detectives to her home in Antut village.

The DCI further revealed that a search of the premises uncovered 27 tightly wrapped bales of cannabis sativa, hidden in sacks and a metallic box. The bhang, weighing approximately 137.8 kilograms, has an estimated street value of Ksh4.13 million.

“In an operation that left no room for escape, Moyale police officers have arrested Amina Mala Gure, 35, a notorious trafficker, who has been on the police radar for her involvement in the underworld of cannabis trafficking,” the DCI statement reads in part.

“Acting on solid intel, the officers raided Gure’s home in Antut village. There, they discovered 27 tightly wrapped bales of Cannabis sativa, hidden in sacks and a metallic box weighing a total of 137.8 kg, with an estimated street value of Ksh4.13 million.”

Crackdown on drug trafficking

The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating along key transport corridors across the country.

DCI, on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, confirmed the arrest of a 26-year-old, Bernard Kungu, who is accused of smuggling 152 rolls of bhang at a bus terminal in Migori while en route to Mombasa.

According to a statement released by the detectives, the officers from Migori Police Station acted swiftly upon receiving a tip-off about an individual at the Tahmeed bus booking office.

“Responding to reports of a suspicious character trying to board a bus to Mombasa at the Tahmeed booking office in Migori, officers rushed to the scene. There, they intercepted 26-year-old Bernard Kungu, who was accompanied by two rather bulky bags,” the statement read.

Upon escorting the individual to the station, officers conducted what the DCI described as an unpacking session, where they discovered 152 rolls of bhang concealed inside the luggage.

“Escorted back to the station for a little ‘unpacking session’, the officers unearthed 152 rolls of bhang tucked neatly in the bags. Upon interrogation, Kungu claimed he was transporting the illicit cargo to Mombasa,” the DCI added.

Similarly, on Friday, April 11, 2025, the DCI reported the seizure of a significant quantity of cannabis sativa during a sting operation along the Moyale-Isiolo Highway.

This operation led to the interception of a long-distance truck and the arrest of four individuals.

“A multi-agency team intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Actros truck driven by Boniface Nthenge Kithuku, 33, and discovered gunny bags filled with bales of cannabis hidden within the truck’s chassis. The concealment technique suggested a well-coordinated drug trafficking attempt,” the DCI revealed.
