Police in Lokichigio, Turkana County, are holding two young men who were arrested after they were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement issued on Sunday, April 27, 2025, said that Lopua Ekuyen, 18, and Lokal Chara, 19, were arrested following a tip-off from the members of the public.

According to the DCI, the AK-47 rifle that was recovered from the two persons of interest had an empty magazine.

“A swift response by Lokichogio Police officers to a tip-off from members of the public has led to the arrest of two young suspects, Lopua Ekuyen, 18, and Lokal Chara, 19, who were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle with an empty magazine,” the DCI stated.

Court arraignment

They are expected to be arraigned on Monday, April 28, 2025.

“The two are in custody, undergoing processing ahead of their court appearance. Meanwhile, the recovered firearm and magazine are being held as exhibits,” the DCI said.

AK-47 recovery in Meru

This comes just a day after police in Isiolo recovered two AK-47 rifles that were linked to a fatal attack that left three National Police Reservists (NPR) dead in Igembe North, Meru County.

The DCI, in a statement issued on Saturday, April 26, 2025, said that the weapons were recovered at Lemorijo Village in the Lengurma location, Isiolo North sub-county, in a joint operation led by the DCI Crime Scene Investigation.

Just like the Lokichogio incident, the firearms recovered in Meru were also found with empty magazines.

“The operation was in response to the brutal incident that occurred on 7th April 2025, where three National Police Reservists (NPR) from Igembe North, Meru County, were fatally shot by armed raiders. The recovered rifles are believed to have been used during the attack.

“This breakthrough was made possible through collaboration between our elite teams, members of the public, the local administration and DCI Igembe North, who has taken over investigations as the case remains under probe,” DCI added.
